Facility data
The 288 facilities in this index come from a curated dataset of Japan data center listings covering 36 regional markets — Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south, including the Tokyo and Osaka metro cores alongside the secondary and regional markets absorbing their overflow. Each entry includes the operator, address, market, and a short description, and links back to its original public source listing. Covering the core metros in full, rather than omitting them, is what makes it possible to see the geographic diversification story — the shift of load from Tokyo and Osaka outward — in the same dataset rather than having to take it on faith.
Map coordinates
The source spreadsheet has no latitude/longitude, and facility addresses are inconsistent in format, so bulk geocoding them wasn't reliable. Instead, each facility is plotted at its market's verified city-center coordinates (checked against each city's public reference data), with a small deterministic offset applied so facilities sharing a market fan out visually instead of stacking on one point. Markers should be read as "this facility is in this city," not as a precise street address — see the facility's own address field, or its source listing, for that.
"Flagship" enrichment
A small number of facilities are flagged as "Flagship" and carry additional detail — investment amounts, power capacity, timelines — sourced from public reporting (press releases, trade press, and industry coverage) rather than the original facility listing. Every added fact on a flagship page links directly to the source it came from. No power capacity, investment figure, or timeline is stated anywhere on this site without a citation; where a fact isn't publicly disclosed, it is simply omitted rather than estimated.
Market-level statistics
Market size, power demand, and geographic-concentration figures come from third-party research firms and industry publications, each with its own scope and methodology. Where estimates diverge — as they do significantly on total market size — this site shows multiple figures side by side rather than picking one as authoritative. Every statistic links to its original source.
Limitations
- This is a snapshot as of September 2026; data center announcements, capacity, and ownership change quickly in this market.
- The facility list is not exhaustive — it reflects what was publicly listed in the source dataset at time of compilation, not a complete census of every data center in Japan.
- This site is a research reference, not investment advice. Market sizing estimates from third parties should be treated as directional, not precise.
